T-Mobile takes on Apple’s popular iPhone with the recent release of the G1 Android phone. What does this mean and why should we care?

• Mobile phones are the most personal piece of technology, with over 3 billion mobile handsets globally. • Growth is dramatic as more people adopt mobile internet use, especially web-based email and search. • The US has the greatest mobile internet usage — roughly 25 percent the size of desktop internet usage. • The launch of the iPhone catalyzed the mobile market more than any other single event last year. • iPhone has 70+ million users in the US alone, even though it is a tiny market share and is limited to AT&T subscribers. • The G1 features a totally open platform, unlike the highly-controlled Apple iPhone. • According to the International Association for the Wireless Telecommunications Industry (www.CTIA.org), mobile data revenues are now 20 percent of total US wireless carrier revenues.

Here’s why your ministry should ride the wave of mobile internet:

• There is a well-known company that is heavily involved with Android software and has a stronger brand name than T-Mobile. In fact, the hand-held devise could be called “GPhone” or even “Google Phone.” That’s right, Google! • Google would not pursue this industry if they didn’t believe that mobile technology would surpass desktop/laptop usage for email and browsing the web.
